Privacy matters when it comes to sexual health, and requesting a gonorrhoea test online keeps the process discreet from start to finish. There's no sitting in a waiting room or explaining your situation at a front desk. After your telehealth consultation, your pathology request is sent to you digitally. You can then visit a collection centre at a time that suits you, whether that's before work, on a lunch break or on the weekend.

  • Doctor consultation. Speak one-on-one with an Australian-registered doctor about your symptoms, sexual health history and any concerns you'd like addressed.
  • Pathology request. Your doctor issues an online pathology request for the right test, which may be a urine sample or swab depending on your circumstances.
  • Results review. Once your results are ready, a doctor reviews them and explains what they mean in plain English, including any next steps.
  • Referrals if required. If your results call for further care, your doctor can arrange treatment or a specialist referral where appropriate.

What is a gonorrhoea test?

A gonorrhoea test checks for the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the cause of the infection. In most cases, laboratories use a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), which detects the genetic material of the bacteria with a high degree of accuracy. The test is usually done on a urine sample, though a swab of the throat, rectum or cervix may be recommended depending on your circumstances. Your results show whether the bacteria are present, and you'll generally need a referral from a doctor before a laboratory can process the test. Our doctors can arrange this through an online blood test request after a short consultation.

Can I get a gonorrhoea test online, and which type do I need?

Yes. You can request a gonorrhoea test online through a telehealth consultation with one of our Australian-registered doctors, who will issue a pathology referral you can take to a collection centre near you. A gonorrhoea urine test is the most common option and is simple to provide at the collection centre. A gonorrhoea blood test isn't typically used to detect the infection itself, though blood tests may be recommended to screen for other infections such as syphilis at the same time. Rapid tests exist, but laboratory NAAT testing remains the standard in Australia because of its accuracy.

Is the test different for men?

The process is largely the same. A gonorrhoea test for men usually involves a first-pass urine sample, meaning the first part of your urine stream, which carries the highest concentration of bacteria if an infection is present. A doctor may also suggest throat or rectal swabs depending on your sexual history. Because gonorrhoea often occurs alongside other infections, your doctor might recommend testing for chlamydia at the same visit.

What does it cost, and when will I get my results?

The consultation fee for a pathology referral is listed on our pricing page. Testing at the laboratory may be bulk billed if you have a valid Medicare card, and you'll need your Medicare number or Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) when you attend the collection centre. Results are usually available within two to four business days, and one of our doctors will contact you to explain what they mean. If treatment is needed, your doctor will talk you through the options, including treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
