  • Pathology request. A chlamydia test request sent straight to your phone or email, accepted at collection centres across Australia.
  • Results review. Once your results are in, a doctor reviews them and explains what they mean in plain English.
  • Referrals if required. If your results need follow-up care, our doctors can arrange treatment or a specialist referral where appropriate.

What is a chlamydia test?

A chlamydia test checks for Chlamydia trachomatis, the bacteria that causes the infection. The standard method is a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), which looks for the genetic material of the bacteria in a urine sample or a swab taken from the genitals, throat or rectum. Most people simply provide a urine sample at a pathology collection centre, with no examination needed. Results show whether the infection is present, and a positive result means treatment is needed. You'll usually need a referral from a doctor before a laboratory can process the test.

Can I get a chlamydia test online in Australia?

Yes. An InstantScripts doctor can assess you through a telehealth consultation and, if appropriate, issue a pathology request for a chlamydia test. You then take that request to a pathology collection centre near you, provide your sample and wait for your results. There's no need to visit a doctor's surgery in person.

How do you test for chlamydia? Urine or blood test?

Chlamydia is detected with a urine test or a swab, not a blood test. Because the bacteria lives in the genital tract, throat or rectum, a chlamydia urine test or swab is far more accurate than testing blood. If a doctor believes you may have been exposed to other sexually transmitted infections, some of those may involve a blood test, but chlamydia itself does not.

Is the test different for men?

A chlamydia test for men usually involves a first-pass urine sample, meaning the first part of your urine stream. It's the same NAAT method used for everyone, and it's quick and painless. Depending on your sexual history, a doctor may also recommend a throat or rectal swab.

How much does a chlamydia test cost?

You pay a consultation fee for the doctor to assess you and issue your blood test or pathology request. Current fees are listed on our pricing page. The test itself is bulk billed at most pathology collection centres if you have a valid Medicare card, though it's worth confirming with your local centre before you attend.

What if I don't have a Medicare card?

You can still be tested. If you don't have Medicare, you can use an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI), which is available through Services Australia via your myGov account. Keep in mind that without Medicare, the pathology laboratory may charge a fee for processing your sample.

How long do results take?

Most chlamydia test results come back within one to three business days of the laboratory receiving your sample. An InstantScripts doctor will contact you to explain your results. If your test is positive, the doctor can discuss treatment with you, which is usually a short course of antibiotics.

Is my test kept private?

Yes. Your consultation, pathology request and results are handled confidentially and stored securely, in line with the highest digital privacy standards. Results are shared only with you and your treating doctor. If you have questions about how your information is managed, you can contact our support team at any time.
