What is the combined oral contraceptive pill?

How does the pill work?

The pill primarily works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries. It also thickens cervical mucus to block sperm entry and alters the lining of the uterus to make it less receptive to implantation. Some types are effective from the first day of use, while others require seven days of consistent use to become effective.

What are the types of combined oral contraceptive pills?

There are several types of combined oral contraceptive pills (OCP). While they function in similar ways, they may differ in hormone composition or packaging. Your doctor will recommend the most suitable option for you. Most combined OCP packs are taken daily at the same time, with some containing 21 tablets followed by a 7-day break.

How effective is the pill?

When taken consistently and without missing doses, the combined OCP is highly effective. However, even missing a single pill can reduce its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. Many people combine this method of contraception with other methods to enhance safety against both unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the pill?

The pill offers many advantages, including high effectiveness, safety for most women, quick return of fertility after stopping, regulation of periods, reduction in period pain, and improvement of acne, endometriosis symptoms, PMS, and some menopause symptoms. It may also lower the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers.

Disadvantages include the need for strict daily use, potential side effects (such as breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, headaches, weight changes, decreased libido, skin discolouration, and mood changes), and a rare but serious risk of blood clots or stroke.

What should you do if you forget to take the pill?

Missing a pill—even once—can lower its effectiveness. Always check the instructions on your pill packet for what to do in this situation. Using a backup method, such as condoms, is recommended until your next period.

Can I request contraception treatment online?

Yes! With InstantScripts, you can request contraception treatment online by completing a short medical consultation. One of our Australian-registered doctors will review your health history and, if appropriate, provide a contraception prescription online—so you can stay in control of your reproductive health quickly and conveniently.

If approved, how fast will I receive my contraception prescription?

If your contraception prescription is approved, you’ll receive it via SMS or email, often within an hour. You can then collect your contraception medication from your local pharmacy or choose discreet home delivery via our partner, Evermed.

What kinds of contraception can InstantScripts help with?

We provide support for a range of contraception treatment options, including the combined oral contraceptive pill, the mini pill, and other forms of contraception medication. Our doctors assess your needs and recommend the most appropriate option for you.

Do I need a prescription for contraception medication?

Yes, most contraception medication requires a prescription. Through InstantScripts, our Australian-registered doctors can assess your health needs and provide a contraception script online if clinically appropriate.

How does online contraception treatment work?

It starts with a simple online consultation, where you’ll answer questions about your health history, lifestyle, and contraception needs. A doctor will review your responses and, if suitable, issue a contraception prescription online. You can also request follow-ups to adjust your contraception medication or treatment at any time.

The combined oral contraceptive pill, also known as ‘the pill’ or OCP, is a form of contraception taken as a tablet. It contains two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen, and is used to prevent pregnancy while also helping to regulate periods and reduce menstrual pain.
