What is anaphylaxis?

What causes anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is triggered by an exaggerated immune system response to an allergen, mistaking it as harmful. This leads to the release of histamine, causing inflammation in the body. The symptoms and affected body systems can vary depending on the allergen and the route of exposure.

What are the symptoms of anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis can manifest in various ways, and symptoms may include difficult or noisy breathing, hoarse voice or difficulty speaking, swollen tongue, dizziness or collapse, throat tightness or swelling, pale and floppy appearance (in young children), wheezing or persistent cough. Prior to anaphylaxis, there may be less severe symptoms such as facial or eye swelling, hives, welts, abdominal pain, or vomiting.

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction, which can occur when exposed to specific triggers like certain foods, insect bites or stings, and certain medications. It is a medical emergency due to its rapid and potentially fatal nature.
