Preparing for pregnancy is personal, and you deserve to do it privately and at your own pace. With InstantScripts, there's no waiting room and no need to rearrange your week around an appointment. • Doctor consultation. A one-on-one discussion with a doctor about your health, your plans for pregnancy and any questions you have before trying to conceive.
  • Pathology request. A blood test request tailored to pregnancy planning, sent straight to your phone or email so you can take it to a collection centre.
  • Results review. Once your results are ready, a doctor reviews them with you and explains what they mean in plain English.
  • Referrals if required. If your results suggest you need further care, our doctors can arrange specialist referrals as part of your consultation.

What is a pregnancy planning test?

A pregnancy planning test is a set of blood tests taken before you start trying to conceive, sometimes called preconception screening. According to Healthdirect and RANZCOG (the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), these tests commonly check your immunity to infections such as rubella and chickenpox, your iron levels, thyroid function and blood group, along with general health markers. Jean Hailes for Women's Health notes that identifying any gaps early gives you time to address them before pregnancy. The sample is collected through a standard blood draw at a pathology collection centre. You'll usually need a referral from a doctor before the centre can take your sample.

Can I get a pregnancy planning test online?

Yes. You can request the test through InstantScripts without visiting a clinic in person. One of our Australian-registered doctors reviews your request and, if appropriate, sends an online blood test request to your email. You then take it to a pathology collection centre near you at a time that suits.

What does the test include?

A typical preconception panel covers immunity to rubella and varicella (chickenpox), a full blood count to check iron and general health, thyroid function, and your blood group and antibody status. Your doctor may recommend additional tests based on your medical history, which you can discuss during a telehealth consultation if needed.

How much does it cost?

InstantScripts charges a flat fee for the blood test request, which you can find on our pricing page. The pathology collection itself may be bulk billed or attract a separate fee depending on the tests ordered and your pathology provider, so it's worth confirming with the collection centre beforehand.

Do I need an Individual Healthcare Identifier?

You may be asked for your Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI), a unique 16-digit number assigned to everyone enrolled in Medicare. Most people never need to look it up, but if you do, you can find it through your Medicare online account via myGov or the my health app.

How long do results take?

Most results are available within two to three business days of your blood draw, though some tests take longer. Your results are reviewed by a doctor, and you'll be contacted to discuss anything that needs follow-up. You can also request a copy for your own records.

Should my partner be tested too?

It can be worthwhile. Around half of fertility challenges involve male factors, so a general health check for your partner is a sensible step. Our doctors can arrange male fertility support and relevant blood tests, so you can both prepare with a clear picture of your health.
