What are irritable bowel tests?

Irritable bowel tests are a group of checks doctors use to investigate gut symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation. There isn't a single test that confirms irritable bowel syndrome on its own. Instead, doctors usually order a combination of blood tests and stool tests to rule out other conditions, such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Once those conditions are excluded and your symptoms match a recognised pattern, a diagnosis of IBS can be made.

Blood tests typically check your full blood count, inflammatory markers, iron levels, thyroid function and coeliac antibodies. Stool tests can look for hidden blood, signs of inflammation (such as faecal calprotectin) and infections. Samples are collected at a local pathology centre for blood, and with a small home-collection kit for stool. Results are sent back to your doctor, who will talk you through what they mean and suggest next steps. In most cases, a doctor's referral is needed before pathology will run the tests. Can I get IBS tests online in Australia?

Yes. You can request a consultation with an Australian-registered doctor through InstantScripts, and if appropriate, they'll issue an online pathology request for the blood and stool tests you need. What's checked in irritable bowel testing?

Most IBS workups include a full blood count, iron studies, C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation), thyroid function, coeliac antibodies and a stool test for blood, inflammation or infection. The aim is to rule out other causes of your symptoms before confirming IBS. Your doctor will choose the tests that fit your history.

How much do the tests cost?

Do I need a Medicare card?

A Medicare card and Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) help us bulk-bill eligible pathology and link your results across the health system. If you don't have one, you can still request a consultation, but some tests may not be Medicare-rebatable.

How long do results take?

Most blood test results come back within one to three business days. Stool tests can take a little longer, usually three to seven days, depending on the lab. Your doctor will follow up once everything is in.

Who should consider testing?

Adults with persistent gut symptoms, such as ongoing bloating, changes in bowel habit, cramping or discomfort lasting more than a few weeks. Anyone with red-flag symptoms, like unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool or a family history of bowel cancer, should see a doctor face-to-face or via telehealth for a proper assessment.
