What are erectile dysfunction blood tests?

Erectile dysfunction blood tests are a group of pathology checks that look for underlying causes of ED. Most panels measure testosterone (often free and total), blood glucose or HbA1c for diabetes, a full lipid profile for cholesterol, and thyroid function (TSH). Some doctors also request prolactin, LH, FSH, and liver or kidney markers depending on your history. The sample is a standard blood draw at a collection centre, and results are reviewed by a doctor who can talk you through what they mean and whether treatment or further investigation is needed. Can I get erectile dysfunction blood tests online?

What's included in an ED blood test panel?

A standard panel usually checks total and free testosterone, fasting blood glucose or HbA1c, a full lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides), and thyroid function. Depending on your symptoms, the doctor may add prolactin, LH, FSH, sex hormone binding globulin, or liver and kidney function. The aim is to spot hormonal, metabolic, or cardiovascular causes that could be contributing to erectile dysfunction.

How much does it cost and is Medicare involved?

Where a Medicare-eligible pathology referral is issued, many tests are bulk-billed at the collection centre, though some specialised tests may attract an out-of-pocket fee. Your doctor will let you know if any items on the request aren't covered before you attend pathology.

Do I need a Medicare card?

A Medicare card isn't required to use InstantScripts, but you'll need an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) for your prescription or referral. Most Australians already have one. If you don't have a Medicare card, pathology tests may not be bulk-billed and you'll need to pay the private fee at the collection centre.

How long do results take?

Standard blood results are usually back within one to three business days. Hormone panels can take a little longer. Do I need to fast before the test?

Fasting is often recommended for cholesterol and glucose testing, usually for 8 to 12 hours, with water allowed. Testosterone is best measured in the morning, ideally between 7am and 10am, when levels are highest. Your doctor and the referral form will confirm the exact instructions so you know what to do before you attend the collection centre.
