How our doctors support vegan blood testing

People on a plant-based diet request screening for different reasons. Some want to check B12 and iron, others are watching vitamin D, zinc, or omega-3 levels. Through a quick telehealth consultation, an Australian-registered doctor reviews your diet, symptoms and history, then arranges the right blood tests for vegans or a specialist referral if needed.

What is a vegan blood test?

A vegan blood test is a panel of pathology tests designed to check the nutrients most likely to run low when you eat a plant-based diet. It typically measures vitamin B12, iron studies (including ferritin), vitamin D, zinc, calcium, and sometimes omega-3 fatty acids and folate. The sample is taken by a standard venous blood draw at a collection centre, and the results show whether any of these levels sit below the healthy range. A doctor's referral is usually required before the pathology lab will process the panel, and a doctor should review the results with you. Sources: Healthdirect, RACGP, health.gov.au.

If you'd like a doctor to organise the referral for you, our team can issue a blood test request online after a short consultation. You can then take the request to any participating pathology collection centre in Australia.

Can I really request a vegan blood test online?

Yes. You complete a short health questionnaire, an Australian-registered doctor reviews it, and if appropriate they issue an electronic pathology request. You take that request to a collection centre. The whole process can usually be done from your phone, without needing to sit in a waiting room.

What's included in the blood panel for vegans?

The standard panel covers B12, iron studies, vitamin D, zinc and folate, with calcium and omega-3 added where clinically useful. If you have specific symptoms or a known condition, the doctor may add or remove tests so the request matches your situation.

Is it bulk billed?

Pathology testing in Australia is bulk billed under Medicare when the tests are clinically indicated and you have a valid Medicare card. The InstantScripts consultation fee is separate. You can see current fees on our pricing page.

Do I need a Medicare card?

A current Medicare card and your Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) help us process the request and allow Medicare to cover eligible pathology costs. If you don't have Medicare, the pathology provider will quote you a private fee.

How long do results take?

Most results come back to the requesting doctor within 1-3 business days. Your doctor will then contact you to talk through any findings and next steps.

Who is this test suitable for?

Anyone following a vegan, vegetarian or mostly plant-based diet who wants peace of mind about their nutrient levels, or anyone experiencing symptoms like fatigue, low energy or recurring illness that could point to a deficiency.
