What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Every woman goes through a different experience with menopause. Some women may have debilitating symptoms whilst others have very few. The reason behind the symptoms of menopause is due to lower levels of oestrogen. Menopausal symptoms can be managed with education, lifestyle changes, support and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), also known as menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).

Hormone replacement therapy is medication that contains female hormones. You take the medication to replace the oestrogen that your body stops making during menopause. Hormone therapy is most often used to treat common menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal discomfort.

The current role of HRT is for menopausal symptom relief, at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration required for the control of bothersome menopausal symptoms.

What are the different forms of HRT?

Hormone replacement therapy primarily focuses on replacing the oestrogen that your body no longer makes after menopause.

Below are the different forms of HRT:

  • Oral tablets
  • Gels or patches (hormones are absorbed through the skin)
  • Creams and tablets placed in the vagina

HRT reduces the risk of various chronic conditions that can affect postmenopausal women, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Bowel cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease

Unsure of which HRT is right for me?

There are benefits and risks with HRT, so it’s important to talk to a doctor if you are considering it. These risks depend on the type of hormone therapy, the dose, how long the medication is taken and your individual health risks. For best results, hormone therapy should be tailored to each person and reevaluated every so often to be sure the benefits still outweigh the risks. Book in a consult with one of our Australian registered doctors and we will call you back within just 2 hours, all from the convenience of your own home.

Frequently asked questions

What is InstantScripts?

InstantScripts is a secure online digital healthcare platform that makes managing your health easy, affordable and efficient.

We offer prescriptions for customers after they complete a short digital consultation with an Australian doctor. Once the digital consultation is completed, the answers are quickly reviewed by our registered doctors and, if approved, a prescription is issued in minutes.

InstantScripts also offers one day or multiple day medical certificates if you are unable to work. Blood tests and personalised healthcare programs are also available all from the convenience of your home.

How do I get a prescription online?

Once you have completed a digital or Telehealth consultation for your selected medication, your prescription request will be reviewed by one of our Australian registered doctors. If a prescription is approved, it will be emailed to your local pharmacy of choice, allowing you to pick up your prescription medication in minutes. A QR code for the medication can also be sent to your phone and email, or the medication can be delivered to your door through our trusted partners.

Can anyone use InstantScripts?

Anyone in Australia can access Telehealth consultations.

For the express script option, you must be 18 years old or over and living within Australia.

Can I get a medical certificate online using InstantScripts?

Yes, a doctor can issue you with a medical certificate if deemed suitable. The medical certificate will be emailed to you within minutes of the doctor reviewing your digital consultation.

For medical certificates that must be valid for more than 1 day, patients must consult with a doctor online via an InstantScripts Telehealth consultation.

Do I need a medicare card to use the InstantScripts service?

You will require a Medicare card for most of our services.
All requests on our site require an IHI (Individual Health Identifier). Generally, if you have a Medicare card number then you will have an IHI, but you could have an IHI without a Medicare card.

Our consultations are not bulk billed, but the pathology ordered through them, or on express pathology are generally bulk billed.

Our express scripts are also generally PBS subsidised so require a Medicare card number

How much does it cost?

Prescriptions without a phone consultation can be obtained via the InstantScripts platform for $15.

Same day Medical Certificates are available online for $19.

Online pathology tests can be requested for $20.

Telehealth consultations with one of our registered Australian doctors are available for $49.

Simply select the ‘Express Shipping’ option when requesting your prescriptions and, for a small additional fee, your medicine will be delivered straight to your door in 1-3 business days. Your medication will be fulfilled by Prahran Amcal Pharmacy located in Melbourne.

Please note that, for safety reasons, not all types of medication are eligible for home delivery.

Does InstantScripts bulk bill?

In January 2022, the Australian Government rules regarding telehealth bulk billing changed. In order to be eligible for bulk-billed doctor telehealth consultations, the patient must have had a face-to-face consultation with their doctor or another doctor in the same practice in the 12 months prior to the current telehealth service request. Therefore, InstantScripts is not able to provide bulk billed appointments. To find out more please visit Australian Government Rules
